The link between Malta and Gozo has been one of the most controversial topics throughout the years. The only transport service (Gozo Channel company limited) currently available has been working for years since 1975 and traveled an average of 8 round trips a day. Today the ferry does over 20,000 trips a year. There exist three modernised ferries named the M.V. Ta' Pinu introduced in the year 2000 ,M.V. Gaudos in 2001 and lastly M.V. Malita in 2002. For over 50 years there have been countless debates, arguments and articles on wether or not there should be an alternative to this service mainly a tunnel since the idea of a bridge has since been excluded. In 1972 a report was commissioned and in it a conclusion was made on how a link would in fact be possible including designs. It is understandable that these plans are outdated however when these plans where issued 100,000 people a year were crossing between the islands. Today an estimated 4.5 million people make use of the ferry (stated on Gozo channel’s official page), so it is about time that an alternative starts being built.
